I have seen similar questions but the solutions did not work hence I am asking here.
So I am trying to install Ubuntu on my system. It was working fine until few weeks ago when it hanged in between an operation and after force shutdown it wasn't working anymore.
I am trying to completely wipe the HDD and install the OS again.
So in gparted I can see no partitions and I keep getting the following errors-

Error fsyncing/closing /dev/sda1: Input/output error

I have 6 partitions on my disk(3 are of less and 500MB generated by Windows I assume and one of 20GB Windows recovery).
After trying to format by Disk Utility I get the following error-

Error wiping device:Failed to probe the device'/dev/sda1'(udisks-error-quark,0)

Can someone help me in solving or at least understanding what the issue might be? The partitions are clearly visible in the Disk Utility which makes me feel that the HDD might still be usable.

PS: The SMART Test is greyed out when the HDD is selected.

Sounds like a hardware failure. Could you check the cables are firmly in place?
