Perseus[1] est constellatio quae in partibus septentrionalibus paene toto anno videri possit. Via lactis per hanc constellationem ducens vix videri potest propter pulveris nubes.


Una ex lucidiorum stellarum Persei Algol stella variablis est. Iam in mediaevalibus temporibus Arabes Astronomi invenere stellam periodice obscuriorem fieri. Algol nomen de verbo Arabico al Ghul derivatum 'diaboli stella' significat. Algol est stella triplex, cuius principalis a duobus satellitibus obscurioribus circumvenitur quarum una periodice inter stellam principalem et Terram versans lucem eius obscurat. Huiusmodi stellae "stellae tegendo variabiles" vocantur. Algol oculus Medusae esse dicitur.

In Mythologia Graeca, Perseus fuit Iovis et Danaae filius, qui gorgonem Medusam mortiferam vicit, cuius obtutu omne animal in saxum mutatum erat, caput ei praecidens. Etiam Andromedam servavit, quae saxo vincita Ceto sacrificatura erat, quam postea praemium in matrimonium duxit.


Itaque Andromeda parentesque Cepheus et Cassiopeia et Cetus ille monstrum item constellationes prope Perseum in caelo sunt.
