Gandavum sive Ganda[1][2] (Batavice: Gent ; Francogallice: Gand) est urbs Flandriae in Belgia circiter 233 925 incolarum et caput provinciae Flandriae Orientalis.


Flumina Legia et Scaldis in Gandavo confluunt. Portus Gandavensis autem fossa quae ducit ad Terneuzen in Nederlandia Scaldi coniunctus est.

Historia |


Gandavum ortum est ex vicis Celticis apud confluentem Scaldis ac Legiae.
Saeculo 7 duae abbatiae, Sancto Petro et Sancto Bavoni dicatae, conditae sunt, quibus Einhardus saeculo 9 praeerat. Eo saeculo urbs vastata est a Viccingis. Deinde, castello Gravensteen a comitis Flandriae constructo, urbs lanae linteique industriae gratia cito crevit, adeo ut saeculo 11 maior esset Londinio Coloniaque Agrippina.


Per medio aevo urbs saepe contra regem insurgit. Lanam enim praecipue ex Anglia hoste Franciae Gandavum advehebatur. Et diversae gildae inter se pugnabant.
Bello centum annorum incipiente anno 1340 Iacobus de Arthevella[3] foedere icto cum Eduardo III rege Angliae eum in foro Vrijdagmarkt accepit et regem Franciae proclamavit. Iacobus usque ad mortem anno 1345 erat dux totius populi Gandavensis contra Francia. Quamobrem etiam nunc Gandavum urbs Arthevellae (Batave: Arteveldestad) vocatur.


Anno 1500 imperator Carolus V ibi natus est. Saeculo 16 bellum religiosum inter Catholicos et Protestantes, quibus Gandavum praecipue favebat, opulentiae urbis finem fecit.


Exeunte saeculo 18, Lieven Bauwens machinam straminibus nendis utilem quae Anglice Spinning mule vocabatur, clam importavit ex Anglia et officinas in Gandavo constituit, quod erat initium industriae conversionis in Europa continenti. Itaque urbs iterum florebat.


Universitas Gandavensis anno 1817 condita est a rege Gulielmo I.


Anno 1913 expositio mundana Gandavi habetur.
