My Ubuntu installation no longer boots up.
I have installed Ubuntu as a dual boot install, with Windows XP (!) and the latest version of Ubuntu.
The OS selector dialog appears:

a) Windows boots properly, and the disk partition holding Ubuntu appears OK;

b) Choosing Ubuntu brings the purple Ubuntu screen, but then a text style screen appears and writes:

Starting User Manager for UID123
Stopping User Manager for UID123
Stopped User Manager for UID123
...
...
...
Stopped /run/user/1000 mount wrapper.

Then the process stops/hangs. Also, upon the initial power-cycle boot-up, the message "No Hard Disk Detected" appears. Although I don't recall seeing that before, the PC does boot into Windows perfectly, and partially(?) to Ubuntu.

Any thoughts on why Ubuntu fails to start?
