Geografie van die Kambrium


Die Kambrium is die eerste geologiese periode van die Paleosoïese Era, en het geduur van sowat 541 miljoen tot 485,4 miljoen jaar gelede. Dit is opgevolg deur die Ordovisium.[1] Die term is deur Adam Sedgwick gevestig, wat dit na Kambrië gernoem het, die klassieke naam van Wallis, waar rotse uit dié tydperk vir die eerste keer bestudeer is.[2]

Die Kambrium is uniek in die opsig dat goed herkenbare meersellige fossiele uit dié tydperk op groot skaal gevind is. Bekende voorbeeld is die trilobiete. In die voorafgaande periode, die Ediacarium word min fossiele gevind. Ons begrip van die Kambrium is dus beter as van baie latere periodes.[3]


In die Kambrium het ’n groot verandering ingetree in die lewe op aarde. Voorheen het net klein, eenvoudige en eensellige organismes bestaan. Ingewikkelde, meersellige organismes het geleidelik toegeneem in die miljoene jare net voor die Kambrium, maar dit is eers in laasgenoemde periode dat organismes wat maklik fossiele vorm, algemeen geword het.[4] Die vinnige diversifikasie van lewensvorme in die Kambrium met harde, fossiliseerbare liggaamsdele, bekend as die Kambriese ontploffing, het die eerste verteenwoordigers van talle filums tot gevolg gehad waaruit moderne groepe spesies ontstaan het soos weekdiere en geleedpotiges. Daar is gedink dat die oorgang van Ediacarium na Kambrium met 'n groot uitwissing gepaard gegaan het omdat die fossiele wat gevind word sterk verskil, maar daaroor stem navorsers nie saam nie. Moontlik is dit net gesigsbedrog.[5]


Terwyl ’n uiteenlopende lewe in die oseane bestaan het, was die land redelik leweloos.[6] Die grootste deel van die kontinente was waarskynlik droog en rotsagtig weens ’n gebrek aan plante.


Die Federale Geografiese Datakomitee van die VSA gebruik die simbool <Є> om die Kambriese periode voor te stel.[7]
