On Ubuntu 16.04 with the default desktop environment, pressing FN+F7 on my laptop keyboard enables the use of my attached VGA monitor - I can cycle between having the desktop mirrored, laptop display only, and external display only.
Using i3wm, this functionality does not work.
xev shows me that FN+F7 maps to XF86WakeUp, but what shell command(s) would I have to bind to get this functionality working?

I don't know if you have found the answer yet but I do use 3 monitors with i3-wm and I've just set up in the i3 config file for executing a startup shellscript that automatically configure my monitors setup by using xrandr. If that's a solution for you, I can post more details.
