Bölgesel tren, şehirler arasında çalışan yolcu Demiryolu hizmetleridir. Bu trenler şehirlerarası demiryolu hattından daha kısa mesafelerde daha fazla durak arasında çalışmakla birlikte banliyö tren hatlarından daha az durak arasında ve daha hızlı çalışmaktadır. Bölgesel tren hizmetleri, kentsel alanların sınırlarının ötesinde faaliyet göstermektedir veya benzer büyüklükteki küçük şehirler ve kasabalar ile bir banliyönün dış kenarında veya dışındaki şehirler ve çevresindeki kasabaları birbirine bağlamaktadır.


Bölgesel trenler, genellikle gün boyunca eşit bir hizmet yüküyle çalışır, ancak yoğun saatlerde biraz daha fazla servis sağlanabilmektedir. Servis, taşıtların şehir merkezlerine getirilmesi konusunda daha az odaklıdır, ancak bu bazı sistemlerdeki trafiğin bir bölümünü oluşturabilir. Diğer bölgesel demiryolu hizmetleri iki büyük kentsel alan arasında faaliyet gösterir, ancak birçok kez ara duraklama yapmaktadır.
