Someone used my WD external hard drive to watch a film on a Mac, as far as I know they didn't reformat it but something has changed and now when I plug it into my Ubuntu 18.04 laptop it isn't mounting. It is visible but not mounting automatically and when I try to mount it manually this message comes up in terminal:

$MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

When I plug the HD into another Mac all the files pop up so they are definitely still there, but I just want to make it compatible for my laptop again.

Any ideas?

  • Open "disks" while the drive is mounted to the system, check if the filesystem is changed or any other details. Try if it mounts from those options
