Have you checked out the help docs for Totem? If the default video player does not have the features you need, you may also want to consider installing a different player like VLC, which is included in the Ubuntu repositories and available in the GUI software center andapt

you might want to try to reinstall the package withsudo apt updatefollowed bysudo apt-get --reinstall install totem. Another more exhaustive reinstall path would be to performsudo apt updatethensudo apt purge totemthesudo apt install totem. Both of these options may reset config files but the purge option will explicitly delete all configuration files in case your currently installed version is borked
