If I boot my PC with the monitor powered off or disconnected, Ubuntu 18.04.3 boots into some super-duper graphical mode that my monitor can't handle. When I eventually power it on, I get this message hovering on the screen:
DSUB
Out of Range
95.1 kHz / 60 Hz
I can Ctrl_Alt+F4 and log in to a terminal, but restarting gdm only brings up the graphical login screen and logging in goes no further.
So my question: where in the boot process does Ubuntu set the final display mode, and can I change it?

I use xorg.conf file like many others you can generate one by running "sudo X -configure" in the terminal also here is a link to ubuntu's manual on xorg manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/xenial/man1/Xorg.1.html

@wraith3690-001 I just get an error saying "Cannot establish any listening sockets". And the xorg logfile says the same thing.
