Die Gavea-rots naby Rio de Janeiro in Brasilië is die wêreld se grootste monoliet by die see.


’n Monoliet is ’n geologiese verskynsel wat bestaan uit ’n enkele groot rots of klip, soos sommige berge, of ’n groot stuk rots wat byvoorbeeld as of in ’n museum of gebou gebruik word. Erosie ontbloot gewoonlik die geologiese formasies, wat dikwels uit baie harde en soliede metamorfe of stollingsgesteente bestaan.


In argitektuur kan dit verwys na ’n gebou wat uitgekap is en deel van die oorspronklike rots bly, soos ’n monolitiese kerk, of na buitengewoon groot klippe soos obeliske, standbeelde of kolomme wat uit steengroewe daarheen gebring is.


Die woord is afgelei van die Latynse monolithus, wat weer kom van die Antieke Griekse woord μονόλιθος (monolithos): μόνος ("een" of "enkele") + λίθος ("klip").
