તમિલ ભાષા (தமிழ்) અથવા તામિલ ભાષા એ દ્રાવિડ ભાષાજૂથમાં એક ભાષા છે જે શ્રીલંકા, સિંગાપુર અને ભારત દેશના દક્ષિણ ભાગમાં આવેલા તમિલનાડુ રાજ્ય અને કેન્દ્રશાસિત પોંડિચેરી પ્રદેશ ની અધિકૃત ભાષા છે. તામિલનાડુ ઉપરાંત દક્ષિણ ભારતમાં વસતા ઘણા પ્રદેશોના લોકો તમિલ ભાષા વાંચી, લખી કે સમજી શકે છે.
ઇતિહાસ
તમિલ ભાષા દ્રાવિડ ભાષા પરિવાર પૈકીની પ્રાચીનતમ ભાષા માનવામાં આવે છે. આ ભાષાની ઉત્પત્તિ સંબંધમાં અત્યાર સુધી એવો ચોક્કસ નિર્ણય નથી થઇ શક્યો કે કયા સમયમાં આ ભાષાનો પ્રારંભ થયો હશે. વિશ્વભરના વિદ્વાનો દ્વારા સંસ્કૃત, ગ્રીક, લૈટિન વગેરે ભાષાઓની જેમ તમિલ ભાષાને પણ અતિ પ્રાચીન તથા સમૃદ્ધ ભાષા માનવામા આવેલી છે. અન્ય ભાષાઓની અપેક્ષામાં તમિલ ભાષાની એવી વિશેષતા છે કે અતિ પ્રાચીન ભાષા હોવા ઉપરાંત લગભગ ૨૫૦૦ વર્ષોથી અવિરત રૂપે આજદિન સુધી જીવનના દરેક ક્ષેત્રોમાં વ્યવહારમાં છે. તમિલ ભાષામાં ઉપલબ્ધ ગ્રંથોના આધાર પર આ નિર્વિવાદ નિર્ણય થઇ ચુક્યો છે કે તમિલ ભાષા ઈસવીસન પૂર્વેનાં કેટલીય સદીઓ પહેલાંના સમયથી જ સુસંકૃત અને સુવ્યવસ્થિત ભાષા છે.
