I an running Ubuntu 14.04 on an older laptop.

  • Memory 961.5 MiB

  • Processor Intel® Celeron(R) CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz

  • Graphics Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset x86/MMX/SSE2

  • OS type 32-bit

  • Disk size 491.1 GB).

Yesterday ,08/Apr/2019, my menu bar started bouncing/jerking for no apparent reason. I have not installed any new programs nor have I done anything that requires adding code etc. This is because I am a user not a programmer or tech type.

Does anyone have any idea how I can stop this happening as a flickering menu bar is quite annoying.

  • As you have not made any changes to the computer and this problem started, I would guess it is a hardware issue. Your computer may be dying.

  • as always make sure you backup all important files ... dropbox.com or mega.nz

  • after you backup files I suggest you install a current Ubuntu release ... I am running 19.04 and its waaay nicer than a 5 year old distro ... checkout askubuntu.com/a/1092435/18025 ... as mentioned if your hardware is 64 bit then install a 64 bit OS as long as you have over half a gig of RAM as you evidently do ... my guess is your hardware is 64 bit to confirm type ctrl+alt+t to open up a terminal then issue lscpu at top of output look for Architecture if it shows x86_64 then you have 64 bit hardware so install a 64 bit OS which is normal today

@ScottStensland You don't install an as yet unreleased 19.04 to cure this problem... and it probably wouldn't work on a machine with so little RAM anyway. OP thinks they have a 32-bit environment anyway. You FIX the current problem.

  • Check the setting for your display, and make sure it's set to a spec that your video display can operate on... ie: 1024x768 60hz.
