1939 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 1-ന്‌, ജർമനി പോളണ്ടിനെ ആക്രമിക്കുന്നതോടു കൂടി രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിന്‌ ആരംഭമായി. ഈ മിന്നലാക്രമണത്തിനു ജർമനി നൽകിയ പേരു 'ഓപ്പറേഷൻ വെയിസ്സ്' എന്നായിരുന്നു. ഇതേ തുടർന്നു സെപ്റ്റംബർ 3-ന്‌ ബ്രിട്ടൺ‍, ഓസ്ട്രേലിയ, ന്യൂസിലാൻഡ്, ഫ്രാൻസ്, ഇന്ത്യ[2] എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളും സെപ്റ്റംബർ 6 ന്‌ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്ക, കാനഡ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളും ജർമനിയ്ക്കെതിരെ യുദ്ധം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. പടിഞ്ഞാറു ഭാഗത്തു നിന്നും നാസി ജർമനി പൊളണ്ടിനെ ആക്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോൾ കിഴക്കു നിന്നും സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയനും പോളണ്ടിനെ ആക്രമിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ സെപ്റ്റംബർ 27-നു പോളണ്ട് കീഴടങ്ങുകയും ഭൂപ്രദേശം ജർമനിയും സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയനും പങ്കിട്ടെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 1940 ഏപ്രിൽ 9 നു നാസി ജർമനി ഓപ്പറേഷൻ വെസെൻബർഗ് എന്ന സൈനികനടപടിയിലൂടെ‍ ഡെന്മാർക്ക്, നോർ‌വേ എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളേയും മേയ് 10-ന്‌ ഓപ്പറേഷൻ ഗെൽബ് എന്ന നടപടിയിലൂടെ ഹോള‍ണ്ട്, ബെൽജിയം, ലക്സംബർഗ്ഗ് എന്നീ രാജ്യങ്ങളേയും ആക്രമിച്ചു കീഴ്പ്പെടുത്തി. തുടർന്ന് ഫ്രാൻസിനെ ആക്രമിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. 1940 ജൂൺ 25-ന്‌ ഫ്രാൻസ്, ജർമനിയുടെ മുൻപിൽ നിരുപാധികം കീഴടങ്ങി. ഫ്രാൻസ് അധിനിവേശത്തിനു ജർമനി നൽകിയ പേര് ഓപ്പറേഷൻ റെഡ് എന്നായിരുന്നു.
