I have a 32GB Toshiba USB drive. Recently I tried writing an image of chrome OS to it with balenaEtcher. It failed. Since then my drive has been unreadable on both windows 10 and Ubuntu.
I have tried formatting it with disk management, diskpart, chrome OS recovery utility, easeus on windows and on Ubuntu I have tried GParted
, mkusb
and fdisk
. All of them couldn't complete the format. What I realized is that my USB drive always ejects in the middle of the formatting. Every single time so the process always doesn't complete.
Any ideas on why its doing that and how to fix it?

On Ubuntu, please open a terminal and typedmesg -w
to listen on kernel messages. Then try to format the USB as you usually do and watch for any related error messages in the terminal that indicate why it disconnected. I would guess it is a hardware problem though - either the USB drive is broken or possibly it doesn't get enough power. You could also try plugging it into different USB ports, different computers, don't use a USB hub if you have one but plug it in directly, ...

That error means the USB stick is probably broken.

You can analyze the problem according to this link. It looks bad, but If you are lucky, you will find a way to revive your USB drive.
